Is it true? Itinerant Angler Podcast vs Fiberglass Manifesto? It sounds like some sort of dub step podcast remix.
A big shot out to Zach Mathews here on his article on Welded Loops. I have used the same methods on my skagit tips. Maybe I should get a vid and some pix up.
Ever since Jeremy Lin appeared on Sports Center and the twiterverse I have been curious about how the would be portrayed in the media. His position as a point guard on an NBA team is something that runs counter to Asian male stereotypes. Countless public figures have stumbled recently trying to comment on this phenomena. I believe Jeff Yang’s article, which I have posted a link to below gets it dead right. I still would like to see more discussion on Asian male stereotypes. It never ceases to amaze me how in this day and age folks find it ok to make racists comments. I am not an expert in these areas so I'll keep an eye out for some meaningful discussions.
The concept of sport and masculinity is one that interests me. I find myself constantly involved in sport between my two main pursuits, fly fishing and lacrosse. Many times I find myself uncomfortable with the language or behavior of those around. I’m thinking about how folks talk about April Vokey and all the scandals that have plagued lacrosse over the past few years. As a coach I have used them as teaching moments with my players. Anyone curious about more on April can check out one of my previous posts. I wonder how ethnicity and masculinity play out in our sport? It seems that we embrace anyone who has the goods. I'm thinking about Skagit Master 1 where Scott Howell recounts mistaking Ed Ward who is Japanese for being Native American. "What tribe are you?" I know i didnt think twice about what Ed's ethicity was. I just wanted figure out how he moved all that line. We hang on Goren Andersson’s words..."I have a drift inside and says go to the river." I am not even sure what sort of scandinavian he is. However, when it comes to women in our sport one doesn’t need to look far. How do we juxtapose Joan Wulff and April Vokey. Is it odd in our over-sexualized time that we have April and the uber-malecentric '50s has Joan. I know Joan is still with us. I would love to listen to that Itinerant Angler Podcast. How cool would it be to listen to Zach interview April and Joan together? I am really curious about what other people think about the media’s portrayal of Lin. If he wasn’t Asian would anyone care that the new young point guard was doing well? What does it say that people are amazed that someone could do so well from a place that is perceived to be academically difficult. As Yang points out in his article often people comments about the ethnicity of soemone else have more to do with their own perceptions than the realities of the person they are commenting on. I’m curious how these themes of ethnicity and masculinity play out in other areas like fly fishing. The best part of the article is at the end. It is about balance in life. It probably speaks more to me as new father but hopefully other find it empowering as well. "A boy who was encouraged rather than coerced to excel, for whom both athletic and academic achievement were placed in balance with simply enjoying life and pursuing higher causes." http://inamerica.blogs.cnn.com/2012/02/14/opinion-man-to-man-defense/?hpt=hp_bn1 -to-man-defense/?hpt=hp_bn1 http://www.itinerantangler.com/podcasts/2012/01/podcast_april_vokey_will_survi.html I love my sport but I am a little annoyed at some of the old boy culture. I am particularly disturbed after listening to April Vokey’s second appearance on Zach Mathews, Itinerant Angler Podcast. I love Zach’s articles and always listen to the podcast. So please do not misconstrue any of my comments as critical of what he is up to. I highly recommend that anyone interested in fly fishing listen to this and all of Zach’s podcasts. You can access them through the link I have included below. I have mad respect for April. She makes a living fishing every day. Isn’t that that dream? I know that it is a hard life. It seems that she has had a more difficult go of it based simply on her appearance. She is very upfront on her culpability in cultivating these issues. By her own words she started a company call “Fly Gal” and could have called it “BC Steelhead Adventures”. The thing I was most disturbed by was how she felt about the tabloid nature and misogynistic way in which the fly fishing press and folks discuss her online. She freely admits that she took part in promoting her image. She went out of her way to look nice in the pictures. I certainly have heard the discussion in the shop and even participated at times. It was quite a shift to see her with those incredible fish. Remember when everyone though that it couldn’t be real. How many times did you hear, ”I bet her BF caught that”. I think it is pretty cool that a young attractive woman can be the real deal. She cannot change the way she looks and simply put good for her for using her image to promote her business and conservation. What I am not OK with is the degrading way that some reduce her to a sexual object. This is not only disrespectful to her and women in general but disrespects our art and the fish we all love. Having witnessed powerful women in my life treated the same way it struck very close to home when I heard the pain in her voice. I like Zach and know he is producing a product that we all want to hear, but would he ask Lefty Kreh about his dating history. April seemed ok with that line of questioning. Maybe they discussed it ahead of time. Maybe she wanted to set the record straight. I have learned a few things though. I respect April way more than I did before over one simple action; she left a relationship over stocked and pellet fed fish. When she opened that door and saw the feed it was if she saw another woman hiding or was confronted with a drug problem that she had been lied to about. I also have been reminded that men will lie about anything to laid. All I have to say is, that guy who ever he is a total and complete DB. Listen below. I welcome your comments. You can find other links to what Zack and April are up to in my links section. http://www.itinerantangler.com/podcasts/2012/01/podcast_april_vokey_will_survi.html |
